When I think of classic recipes that are made for slow cooking, Crockpot Baked Beans is a total classic! Several kinds of beans combined with chopped bacon and slow cook in a sweet, tangy sauce just sounds mouth watering! If you aren’t in the fall mood just yet (I know, I know, August isn’t even over!) these slow cooker baked beans just might get you there. This particular night we had these delicious baked beans with some grilled hot dogs and yellow mustard. I don’t think I need to tell you, but this was total dinner perfection if you ask me! Do you have to cook bacon before you put it in the slow cooker? Yes, bacon does best in the slow cooker when it’s pre-cooked in a skillet. If you want that delicious bacon grease, go ahead and add that to the slow cooker as well, along with the rest of the ingredients. Why are baked beans called baked beans? Because they were originally intended to be baked in the cans they come in from the grocery store! Technically these aren’t “baked” beans as they are heated in the Crockpot, but it essentially does the same thing as baking – just better, in my opinion! How to make Crockpot Baked Beans: Cook, drain, and chop bacon and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together brown sugar, ketchup, chili powder and cumin. In the bottom of a slow cooker, add kidney beans, chili beans, butter, beans, green beans, baked beans, chopped bacon, and sauce. Cover and cook until done. How long does it take for baked beans to cook? 3 hours on low setting, for this particular recipe. What kind of beans are baked beans made from? A variety of beans make the best baked bean recipe! They had dry beans (Navy and Great Northern), molasses, clay pots, and ovens, hence baked beans, and this is from the founding of our nation. I am a 70 year old and remember when every bakery in New England would soak the beans overnight, put them in pans or crocks with ketchup, molasses, salt pork, and spices and have them ready for Saturday’s supper.
