Allow the casserole to rest in the refrigerator overnight and you’ll have a delicious breakfast baking in the oven in the morning! This recipe for Overnight French Toast Casserole will be wow-ing your guests at the next brunch for sure! I like to have this recipe on hand for holiday mornings also, my kids absolutely love this one. Sweet, cinnamon French toast warm and ready all at the same time! While you don’t need to let this sit in the refrigerator overnight, it’s definitely better if you do. The liquid takes time to soften all of the bread and it just allows the flavors to all come together. I’ve made it without allowing it to sit overnight and it tasted fine, too! What’s in this recipe? Pretty typical French toast ingredients for this one. Grab a loaf of Italian bread at your grocery store’s bakery department – one loaf is enough for this recipe. You’ll also need melted butter, eggs, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. How long overnight should this casserole rest? Aim for around 8 hours in the refrigerator overnight. Do I have to let this sit overnight? Can I bake it right away? Yep! The egg mixture won’t have nearly enough time to soak through the whole casserole, but it will still taste wonderful. The edges of the bread on the top will probably be a little crispier than if you let it rest overnight. How to make this recipe: In a small mixing bowl, stir together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set this bowl aside. 2. In a larger mixing bowl, whisk together the milk and the eggs until smooth. Set this bowl aside. 3. Slice the Italian bread into thick, 1 inch slices. 4. Pour melted butter into the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking dish. Lay one layer of bread slices on top of the butter. Sprinkle half of the brown sugar mixture over the bread slices. 5. Repeat for a second layer with the remaining bread slices and brown sugar mixture. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top of the casserole. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight. 6. In the morning, remove the foil and bake. Drizzle some maple syrup over top of the casserole if desired before serving. Your house is going to smell wonderful in the morning with this delicious casserole baking in the oven. It’s heavenly! Does this casserole need maple syrup? Not at all! I like to just drizzle a tiny bit over the top of the slices as I serve them on a plate, but this is really just for looks. It truly is sweet all on its own with the brown sugar in between the layers. Can regular bread be used instead? No, you’ll need a much thicker bread for this casserole. Substitute the Italian bread for: sliced brioche croissants sliced in half length-wise leftover hamburger or hot dog buns leftover plain dinner rolls Can I add fruit to this casserole? Sure you can! Add chopped strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries on top of the bread layers before baking in the oven in the morning. Just watch to make sure the fruit doesn’t get a bit over done during the baking process! Kiki says July 13, 2023 at 3:13 am This reminds me 8f bread pudding. Used swirled cinnamon raisin bread, pre toasted it was great. Family has dairy issues used almond milk and Lactaid dairy free milk with vegan cream cheese, about 1/2 cup whipped in eggs to give it some pizzazz. Also put vanilla bean for seasoning. Good vanilla would do just as well. Still to me it tastes like old fashioned bread pudding 🍮 Reply
