Served with warm marinara sauce for a perfect snack or party appetizer! We love adding a side of pizza sticks when we order takeout from time to time. My kids love them, and so do we! It’s crazy, though, how easy they are to make from home. Homemade Cheese Pizza Sticks are so much cheaper to make at home, too! These are great to make as a snack for a movie night, or make two batches to serve at a party or gathering. Be sure to keep the pizza sauce warm, it’s a must for dipping these delicious pizza sticks! What’s in this recipe? Pretty simple ingredients here! The most essential ingredient is the refrigerated thin crust pizza dough. I usually buy the Pillsbury brand and you’ll find the pizza dough in the grocery store in the same section as the other refrigerated rolls and crescent rolls. In my grocery store it’s right near the eggs and cheese. You’ll also need chopped onion, minced garlic, olive oil, Italian seasoning, dried basil, dried thyme, shredded mozzarella cheese, and grated Parmesan cheese. Of course you’ll also need pizza sauce or marinara sauce for serving these pizza sticks! Can frozen diced onion be used? Yes! In fact, that’s exactly what I use in this recipe. There’s no need to even thaw the diced onion, just mix it with the other ingredients still frozen – it will cook perfectly in the oven. Can fresh herbs be used instead of dried? Absolutely! You’ll need one tablespoon of fresh minced oregano and one half tablespoon of fresh minced basil. I love doing this in the summer time with I have fresh herbs to pick from in the garden – they taste absolutely delicious in these homemade cheese pizza sticks! How to make this recipe: In a medium sized bowl, stir together the olive oil, diced onion, minced garlic, oregano, Italian seasoning, and basil. Set this bowl aside for a moment. 2. Remove the pizza dough from the package and carefully unroll it onto a cookie sheet. The edges can become curled because of how it’s rolled up into the can, so carefully press the edges down flat onto the cookie sheet. Spread the herb mixture over the pizza dough. Try to get the mixture evenly to all the edges of the dough. 3. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the dough and then sprinkle to grated Parmesan cheese over the mozzarella. 4. Bake the pizza dough in the oven until golden brown on the edges. Remove it from the oven and allow it to cool about five minutes. 5. Use a pizza cutter to slice in half length wise, and then into smaller strips. Serve the pizza sticks with warmed pizza sauce or marinara sauce. Can homemade pizza dough be used? Sure! Just be sure to press the homemade pizza dough out fairly thin since pizza sticks are thinner than typical thick crust pizza would be. Then just proceed with the recipe! Storing leftovers: If you have leftover pizza sticks, you can store them in a plastic container or plastic bag and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat them in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until they’re hot. Freezer directions: Be sure the pizza sticks have cooled completely to room temperature. Place the pizza sticks in a freezer safe zip top bag, label the bag, and freeze for up to 3 months. Microwave the frozen pizza sticks for 1 – 2 minutes until hot. This is a great solution to stock the freezer with budget friendly snacks for the kids and family!
