Filled with plump raisins, a slice of this Irish soda bread is perfect with a cup of coffee! Growing up in Philadelphia, this exact recipe for sweet Irish Soda Bread was a tradition for St. Patrick’s Day! It was so popular, as teens we made loaves and loaves of this bread as a fundraiser for our church youth group. Spoiler alert – we sold out of this delicious bread every year! Why is it called Irish Soda Bread? Traditional savory Irish Soda Bread used only flour, baking soda, salt, buttermilk, and occasionally raisins. This particular recipe uses baking powder, which contains baking soda. Why do you boil the raisins? Boiling the raisins for short time makes them soft and plump, which tastes SO GOOD in this delicious bread! How do you make Irish Soda Bread? Place the raisins in a small pot of boiling water for a few minutes. Drain and dust with a small amount of flour. In a large mixing bowl, blend flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and shortening with a pastry blender or with your fingers. Add in milk and eggs. Stir until well moistened. Fold in raisins and spread batter into a loaf pan. Bake and cool! How long is Irish Soda Bread good for? This bread will last 5 days at room temperature, just be sure to cover it tightly.
