Made with York peppermint patties, cake mix, butter, eggs, and powdered sugar. These are absolutely fantastic to add to Christmas cookie trays! Peppermint Patty Cookies combine all of the favorite flavors of the season: chocolate and mint! We are total peppermint patty fanatics in this house, well at least most of us are, so one batch doesn’t last long around here. I always plan on making 2 – 3 batches at a time. That way I have enough to give to family and friends. I especially love the crinkle effect the powdered sugar has on the cookies as they bake! It make them so pretty with very little effort. I’m very serious, if you can roll a ball into powdered sugar you can make these beautiful cookies – I promise it’s easy! What size peppermint patties are used in this recipe? You’ll need the regular size (NOT the “fun” or “snack” size) peppermint patties. I usually buy the family size bag of them found in the candy aisle of my grocery store. You can certainly buy the ones that come in seasonal shapes for Christmas if you’d like – that would make them super fun to celebrate Christmas! What size box of cake mix do I need? You’ll need a 15 oz box of devil’s food cake mix. What’s in this recipe? Not much, actually! Peppermint patties, devil’s food cake mix (ignore the ingredients listed on the box), butter, eggs, and powdered sugar. Be sure to leave the butter out on the counter for an hour or two to come to room temperature. Can I substitute regular chocolate cake mix? That works fine, just be sure the chocolate cake mix is 15.25 oz. Can I skip rolling them in powdered sugar? If you’re out of powdered sugar, you can skip this step. But I do recommend making them that way – they are super pretty and festive with the white crackling on the outside of the cookies! How to make this recipe: In a large bowl add in the dry devil’s food cake mix, room temperature butter, egg, and water. Blend the ingredients well with a hand mixer. The dough will be thick! You might need to scrape the dough off of the beaters a few times as it’s mixing to incorporate all the ingredients well. Cover the bowl and chill for 1 hour. Scoop dough into small balls using a tablespoon measure. Roll them in powdered sugar and place on a cookie sheet. Immediately after baking, press an unwrapped York peppermint patty into the center of each warm cookie. Allow the cookies to cool completely on the counter. Store the cookies in a covered container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or refrigerate for up to a week. Recipe pro tips: Be sure to line the cookie sheets with foil or parchment paper. I like to use reusable silicone baking mats found on Amazon – I just pop them in the dishwasher when I’m done! Use holiday shaped York peppermint patties to make these cookies extra festive! The tops of the peppermint patties will be warm after pressing them into the warm cookies – use some Christmas sprinkles to decorate them before the cool completely If these are set out in a warm kitchen they may start melting a bit, be sure to keep them room temperature or cooler – or just keep them chilled in the refrigerator Can these cookies be frozen? Yes! Place them in freezer bags and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving. Can these cookies be made with Hershey Kisses instead? Yep! That would definitely have a different flavor, not mint in any way, but they would still be fantastic – and very, very chocolate-y!
