Apple Crumb Pie By Paul Miller • April23,2020 • Updated November 4, 2021 • 3 Comments 1.2K Jump to Recipe Jump to VideoThis award winning recipe for Apple Crumb Pie has been in my family for years! Flaky pie crust filled with a fresh apple filling and topped with the best crumb topping made with brown sugar and butter. This is the apple pie recipe you’ve been searching for! There is simply nothing better than the smell of apple pie baking in the oven! This classic pie is perfect any time of the year, but in our house it’s absolutely required in the fall. Besides the fresh apples, I highly suggest having the remaining ingredients on hand to mix up and bake at a moment’s notice. This is a great recipe also for company or to bring over to a friend’s house. Keep it plain or serve it with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream! What’s in this recipe? For the pie, you’ll need: 6 apples sugar flour nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt 9 inch unbaked pie crust For the crumb topping, you’ll need: flour butter brown sugar How to make this recipe: Peel and dice the apples and place in a large mixing bowl. Add in flour, sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Mix to coat the apples well. Spread into a pie plate fitted with an unbaked pie crust. In a separate bowl, blend the flour, butter, and brown sugar with a pastry blender or two knives. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples in pie crust. Bake and cool. Slice and serve! Can I use my homemade pie crust? Absolutely! In fact, that’s exactly what my mom does every year when she makes this exact recipe. I tend to love my shortcuts, though, and store-bought pie crust is just as good for me and saves time. What kind of apples do I need? Any! Though I tend to pick fuji or gala apples, really any variety works well for this pie. Pro tips: Cover the pie with foil for at least the first 15 minutes of baking to prevent over browning It will seem like too much crumb topping, just pile it on. You will want as much topping as you can get once you take a bite! Use COLD butter when blending the topping ingredients If you don’t have a pastry blender, a small food chopper works well to blend the crumb topping Other recipes you might like: Buttermilk Custard Apple Pie Apple Pie Cake Pumpkin Pie Crumb Cake Crockpot Brown Sugar Acorn Squash If you liked this recipe, leave a rating and a comment below this post! Marie Almy says November 3, 2021 at 11:47 pm The baking directions are conflicting between the tips and the actual directions…the tips say to remove after the first 15 minutes of baking, and directions say to remove the foil in the last 15 minutes of baking. And 425° seems high for the full baking time. Reply
Kelly Miller says November 4, 2021 at 11:37 am The recipe card directions are correct: you initially bake the pie loosely covered in foil for the first 15 minutes, remove, then continue baking for 25-30 minutes. I will fix it in the tips section, thank you for catching that! The temp is definitely correct – this is a deep dish pie filled completely with raw apples, the high 425 temp is needed to cook them through. Let me know what you think of it! Reply
