Calico Beans By Kelly Miller • March20,2019 • 5 Comments 4.7K 15 Jump to Recipe Calico Beans recipe made with bacon, ground beef, and beans in a sweet and tangy sauce! This recipe for Calico Beans has been in my family for years and years. A dear church member once brought it to a potluck dinner, we snagged the recipe, and here is the famous dish. Make it as a side dish for a party, or as a whole meal for your family! What are calico beans? Calico baked beans are typically made with bacon, ground beef, several types of beans along with a sweet sauce. Basically the ultimate baked beans recipe! Where can I find a can of Pork and Beans for this recipe? Pork and beans can usually be found next to the other canned baked beans in the grocery store. Do I need to drain the bacon before cooking the ground beef? Nope! You want all the bacon-y goodness infused in the beef. How to make calico beans: Cook bacon until crispy, then lay on paper towels to drain. Cook ground beef in bacon grease until brown. Drain and return to pan. Stir in baked beans, pork & beans, lima beans, kidney beans, and cooked bacon. Stir in brown sugar, ketchup, dried minced onion, and mustard. Transfer to a baking dish and bake until hot! Can this recipe be made ahead of time? Yes! Prepare the recipe up until the point of baking. Then cover and refrigerate up to a day in advance before baking and serving. Can this recipe be frozen? Absolutely! If making ahead, cover and freeze before baking. Allow to thaw before baking and serving. Or you can also freeze individual portions as leftover meals as well. What do you serve with calico beans? In my family, anything grilled goes wonderful with these beans: burgers, hot dogs, even BBQ chicken. However, this certainly makes enough as a meal in itself. Just add a side salad or steamed vegetables if you like!
