I’m so unbelievably proud of Silas at the moment, I can hardly contain myself. He is learning to read. Actually real words and remembering them and recognizing them in books that we read. Ok, maybe my enthusiasm is a little exaggerated, but I’m a teacher at heart and it’s SO HARD to teach kids how to read! There are so many techniques and opinions on which is the right way. Guided reading. Sight word practice. Even which sight word list you use can be debated. Not to mention the fact that you’re trying to teach 5 year olds how to do something that will impact them for the rest of their lives. It’s nerve wracking! Given all the strategies, I honestly think the best method to teaching kids how to read is exposure to the printed word. Read, read, and read some more to them. Get excited about what you’re reading, wonder out loud what will happen next in the story. They absolutely will mimic your enthusiasm about reading. If you’re curious, he’s learning to read color words. Now I’m not sure if this was on purpose on this part of his amazing Kindergarten teacher, but practically every book we read right now about fall uses color words to describe the leaves on the trees. He’s constantly recognizing his words in books and he gets so excited! So of course we had a piece of this amazing Peanut Butter Cup Pound Cake to celebrate while we were practicing his word cards. This pound cake is SO easy because it uses one of my favorites… you guessed it, a cake mix! And as an added bonus, you can get two pound cake loaves from one boxed mix – great for sharing with a fellow peanut butter cup lover! Oh man is this cake good with a big glass of cold milk, yum!
