Easy Grandparent Gift: Fingerprint Ornaments

December 19, 2012

I've been seeing a lot of different fingerprint/handprint/footprint ideas around for adorable Christmas ornaments. This year we have a 3 year old, a 16 month old, and an 8 month old (my adorable nephew, Elliott). Two out of the three are not yet able to follow directions in any way, so I decided to try a simple fingerprint reindeer ornament based on the Family Reindeer Plate we made together (scroll down for my tips on how to make projects like this less messy). Here's what you'll need:

Fingerprint Reindeer Ornaments

glass Christmas ornaments
brown acrylic paint
red acrylic paint
black sharpie
cute, pudgy baby fingers :)

This works best to have one child at a time make all of their ornaments. In our case, we had each make three ornaments. One for us to keep, and one for each set of grandparents. Plan this out because I should have had them make more for the great-grandparents as well! Squirt a little of the brown paint on a disposable plate and dip the baby's finger in the paint, blotting it once on the paper, and then make multiple fingerprints on the ornament. Re-coat their finger with paint as needed. Allow to dry, then draw the eyes and antlers with a sharpie and paint a red dot for the nose.

Don't forget to write their name and the year on the bottom!

While these easy grandparent gifts are adorable, projects like this can be very messy! Here are some tips to keep these projects with your kids, especially really young kids, less messy:

  • Keep wipes, like Wet Ones wipes, handy
  • Have an extra set of hands to help with any drips or spills
  • Use washable paint if possible
  • Keep it simple: the younger the child, the simpler the project!
  • Have one child at a time make their ornament
With this particular project, I needed to use acrylic paint so I MADE SURE we had wipes ready. I'm happy to report we had no huge messes with this project and the kids made some adorable keepsake ornaments for us and their grandparents to enjoy.

I like the smudged ones the best. :)
