This Creamy Baked Ziti is a total family favorite dinner! Layers of ziti pasta, meat sauce, mozzarella, provolone, and sour cream - absolutely delicious!

Creamy Baked Ziti

I originally posted this recipe here on Mostly Homemade Mom over 5 years ago. At the time, I was a full time teacher with a toddler and an infant. Paul and I had our share of layoffs and job losses and we were trying to make ends meet when I decided to see if I could earn a little extra money by trying this "blog thing" along with my teaching job.

If you would have told me way back then that this little "blog thing" would now be my fulltime job, I would have said that you're nutso! I still can't believe it sometimes that this is my job, I love it THAT much. Thank you for being along with me for the ride!

I left the original post below as it originally appeared in 2012 - just with an updated printable recipe card and how-to video. We still absolutely LOVE this baked ziti recipe and I'm sure your family will, too!

I have made this recipe for baked ziti for years. My best friend gave it to me, handwritten on an index card, and put it in my wishing well at my bridal shower. Ella was always an amazing cook. Growing up, I can remember standing in her parents' kitchen making dinner or some fabulous dessert together. I think that might have been where my love of cooking first began!

This recipe for ziti is a crowd pleaser. The sour cream in this dish gives it a rich, creamy flavor. We've made this for various family functions. It freezes very well also. Serve with a great salad and some bread sticks!

prep time: 20 MINScook time: 30 MINStotal time: 50 mins

ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 jars spaghetti sauce
  • 16 oz ziti, cooked to al dente
  • 1/4 lb sliced mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 lb sliced provolone cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons oregano

instructions

  1. Cook pasta until al dente. Meanwhile, brown ground beef and diced onion in a large skillet, drain. Add two jars spaghetti sauce, cover and simmer for about 15 minutes.
  2. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick spray. Spread half of ziti on bottom of dish. Layer with alternating slices of mozzarella and provolone cheese.
  3. Ladle half of meat sauce over cheese. Place dollops of the sour cream over the meat sauce (use all of the sour cream, not half as this will be the only layer of sour cream). Repeat layers as listed ending with the meat sauce.
  4. Sprinkle top with grated parmesan cheese and oregano. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

This baked ziti is actually a staple for our family during holiday meals and big get-togethers. One pan of this make enough for a TON of people, so the 12 person serving size listed on the recipe card is being VERY conservative. You'll be looking forward to leftovers, though, so be ready!!
